Change the future of stroke

COUNTS

Each year, an estimated 12 million people suffer a stroke, leading to over 6 million deaths.

Stroke is already among the top three global drivers of NCD-related death and disability. Without urgent action, its human cost will continue to escalate, with a consequent cost of US$1.6 trillion to the annual global economy by 2050.

Thanks to decades of progress, stroke is now highly preventable, treatable, and recoverable. We have the tools and knowledge to act— and now we have a strong WHO Resolution that provides the framework for change.

With your support we can change the future for stroke.
The time is NOW.

Reducing the Global Burden of Stroke- Strengthening Prevention, Acute Care, Rehabilitation and Health

The adoption of the first-ever WHO Resolution on Stroke at the 79th World Health Assembly commits Member States to prioiritize stroke as part of the global NCD response. It also gives WHO a mandate to support countries through technical guidance, implementation support, monitoring, research, and global reporting.

From Global Commitment to National Action

Adopting the resolution was only the beginning. Its success will be measured not by what was agreed in Geneva, but by what is delivered in countries around the world.

The Global Stroke Action Coalition is working with partners, WHO, governments, healthcare professionals, researchers, civil society and people with lived experience to turn this historic commitment into measurable progress for all. Together, we aim to support effective implementation, promote accountability, share best practice, and advocate for the policies, investment, and leadership needed to reduce the global burden of stroke.

Now is the time to act.

Every country can do something to improve stroke outcomes and the resolution provides us with an opportunity to develop national stroke plans and strengthen health systems, to ensure that everyone has access to the best possible stroke prevention, treatment, rehabilitation, and continuing care.

Together we can transform this landmark resolution into lasting improvements for millions of people affected by stroke worldwide.

Core Pillars of the Resolution

Primary Prevention

Risk factor control

Primary care integration

Health literacy and schools-based prevention

Acute care and rehabilitation

Pre-hospital recognition and referral pathways

Imaging and thrombolysis capacity

Multi-disiplinary rehabilitation and long-term support

Surveillance and data

National stroke registries

Standard sex-disaggregated indicators

Monitoring incidence, mortality, risk factors, service availability, time to treatment and outcomes

Health systems strengthening

Underpinning all pillars of the Resolution.
