We have the tools to reduce the impact of stroke.

The last three decades have seen major advances at every stage of stroke care. As we look forward to the future, we do so with the knowledge that:

Most strokes can be prevented

With 80% of strokes linked to modifiable risk factors, primary-level interventions could cut the overall stroke burden in half and yield a 1:10 return on investment.

Even the most serious strokes can be treated

Expanding access to clot busting (thrombolysis, IVT) and clot removal (mechanical thrombectomy, MT) in high, middle and low-income countries will substantially reduce disabilities and deaths.

Rehabilitation improves recovery

20–40% of healthcare systems lack basic rehabilitation services. Closing this gap will reduce the risk of long-term disabilities and improve people’s quality of life.

Every minute counts. Join the call for #StrokeActionNow

Acting on stroke will...

Save millions of lives

Already the cause of 7 million deaths a year, if we don't act now that number is set to increase by up to 50%.

Transform patient health

Action on prevention, treatment and rehabitiation will improve outcomes, reduce costs and create  healthier, longer lives for all.

Reduce the burden on caregivers

Stroke doesn't just affect the individual patient, it has profound effect on the physical mental and financial health of caregivers.

Save on direct healthcare costs

Action on stroke is an investment that reduces both direct and and indirect health costs which are set to reach US$1.6 trillion by 2050.

Improve economic productivity

Unlock new gains in other NCDs

Stroke is one of the top 3 causes of NCD-caused death and disability. Action on stroke can unlock progress on other NCDs and help goverments deliver on their health and development goals.

Help achieve Health for All

The burden of stroke is carried by those who can least affort it. Without urgent action by 2050 almost all of the global burden will be in low and middle-income countries.
